KUALA LUMPUR – Those who have been implicated in mega scandals such as 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) should be ashamed to leave their homes if they have any dignity and integrity, said Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang-PH).
In yet another jab at former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak (Pekan-BN), Hanipa told the Dewan Rakyat that there were individuals who instead have been allowed to travel around the country and abroad.
“In this country, there are individuals who do not know how to be embarrassed and are still allowed to roam around here and there with a driver, bodyguard, and escort vehicles.
“People will welcome him, even when he is a big thief in the country.”
Last month, the appellate court granted Najib access to his passport between October 20 and November 22, allowing the Pekan MP to visit his daughter in Singapore.
Hanipa said this during the second reading of the Budget 2022 debate this afternoon.
He added that he was puzzled at how some Muslims did not show any shame in Malaysia when non-Muslims in other countries would be remorseful after being linked to such scandals and would resign if what they did had tarnished the image of their countries.
“But in Malaysia, these sorts of people are roaming around.”
Hanipa raised the matter to point out the astronomical national debt brought by the 1MDB scandal, which is said to be around RM32 billion.
He also took a swipe at Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz over the budget speech, which he claimed was littered with rhetoric.
“How can students who just graduated be barred from leaving the country (due to student debt), but those responsible for making the monster that is 1MDB be allowed to travel around?” Hanipa asked.
He also questioned how a government, which did not have the people’s mandate, be allowed to engage in the wanton spending of taxpayer’s money.
He said, for example, there were three community halls built in Pagoh costing RM35.4 million, which were approved during the emergency, as well as the RM38 million in renovation costs for the “extravagant” prime minister’s official residence in Putrajaya.
“There are people struggling to pay rent and mortgages. There are also people who have killed themselves due to economic problems, and yet there’s a side (in Parliament), especially an Islamic party, that changes office furniture.
