KUALA LUMPUR – The authorities have clarified that former prime ministers are provided with police outriders under the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980 (Act 237).
In a statement issued by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, police provide outrider services to all former Malaysian prime ministers as part of their privileges.
“Police will continue to provide such services to any former prime ministers who are facing legal action until the appeal process is deemed exhausted by the courts.
“Recently, the police have detected several parties disputing the outrider privileges provided to former prime ministers.”
Previously, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak saw his outrider privileges rescinded when Pakatan Harapan came into power in 2018, saying he could only apply for them for official use.
In 2016, the Najib-led administration withdrew the same privileges for former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when the latter was campaigning.
