[UPDATED] Interpol yet to issue Red Notices for Nicky Liow, Jho Low

KUALA LUMPUR – Interpol has yet to put up the Red Notices for fugitives Nicky Liow and Low Taek Jho although Malaysian police have made the applications.

During his visit in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the decision could be due to certain reasons not disclosed to him.

He added that he will get the federal Criminal Investigations Department director to provide an explanation on the matter.

“From my understanding, there are certain protocols that need to be complied with in order for the Red Notices to appear.”

According to Interpol, a Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

It contains two main types of information:

– Information to identify the wanted person, such as their name, date of birth, nationality, hair and eye colour, photographs and fingerprints, if available.

– Information related to the crime they are wanted for, which can typically be murder, rape, child abuse or armed robbery.

Red Notices are published at the request of a member country, and must comply with Interpol’s constitution and rules. A Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant.

In April, Johor police chief Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said Interpol issued a Red Notice against Liow and his assistant, a 31-year-old Chinese national named Niu Zhe.

Then IGP Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said in February last year that Low was on the Red Notice list and rubbished reports that claimed otherwise. – The Vibes, December 12, 2021
