MALAYSIA will not be influenced or change its stance on Low Taek Jho or Jho Low, even if the fugitive businessman is pardoned by United States (US) President Donald Trump.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that any decision regarding pardon in the US is the country's business.
However, the Prime Minister stressed that Malaysia will still adhere to the legal process in handling the case involving Jho Low.
"Malaysia's stance is clear: we follow the legal path. That (pardon) is a matter for the US decision, that is their business, but our stance will not be influenced, disturbed or threatened by that country's decision," he said.
He said this to reporters after performing Friday prayers at the As-Sodiqin Mosque, Taman Kobena, today.
It was earlier reported that Jho Low was among about 250 individuals who may be considered for Trump's pardon in conjunction with the country's 250th Independence Day celebration, tomorrow.
On another issue, Anwar said the cancellation of Tan Sri Azam Baki's membership as an advisor to the National Financial Crimes Prevention Centre (NFCC) can only be made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The Prime Minister said that for now, Azam's appointment to the NFCC is valid until 2027.
"On this issue, his appointment is valid until 2027, and the power to cancel it can only be done by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.
Earlier, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin questioned the justification for Azam's appointment as an advisor to the NFCC, given that the former Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was embroiled in several issues, including scandals related to mafia corporations and share ownership.
Apart from Hamzah, National MCA Youth Deputy Chief, Mike Chong Yew Chuan, also asked the government to provide an immediate explanation regarding the claim that Azam has been appointed as an advisor at NFCC.
NFCC Director-General, Datuk Seri Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil, through a media statement, had also explained that Azam's appointment as a member of the Advisory Board for the period of 20 September 2024 to 19 September 2027 was made in an individual capacity with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. – July 3, 2026
