MIRI – National opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is bringing the PKR “reformasi” war cry into rural Sarawak to stop what he said are decades of oppression and injustice by the state regime.
The PKR president went to the Lambir constituency last night, and told Malaysians in longhouses and villages there that they must stand up for their rights.
“The land you live on has abundant natural resources like rich forest products, oil and gas, and mineral resources,” he said.
“However, all this wealth is being taken away by those in power, by the rich towkays and powerful politicians. They turn forests into timber camps, they take away all your wealth.
“The powerful politicians in the state government and their cronies get richer all the time. The rural folk remain poor, even with no treated water and no proper electricity.”
He pointed to roads that have been in bad condition for decades.
“For so long, the rural communities have been oppressed. Don’t remain silent anymore. Stand up and fight for your rights.
“Bring reformasi to rural Sarawak,” he said.
Anwar had arrived in Miri during the evening and headed to Lambir to help out PKR candidate Zulhaidah Suboh who is contesting against incumbent Ripin Lamat, representing the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition.
Lambir is about 60km south of Miri.
Telling the rural folk that they must not remain victims of oppression, Anwar urged them to vote Sarawak PKR into the state assembly so that the party can fight for them there as well.
“We will speak out against injustice, we will not let oppressing forces suppress you anymore,” he said.
The state PKR is contesting in 27 of Sarawak’s 82 constituencies. Polling day is on December 18. – The Vibes, December 13, 2021
