KUALA LUMPUR – Chaos and devastation still reign for the residents of Taman Sri Muda whose homes are knee-deep in floodwaters.
As the waters are slowly receding, more four-wheel-drive vehicles and boats are hurrying into the neighbourhood to help those who have been stranded since Saturday.
Resident Megala Murthi spoke to The Vibes, expressing her anger over rescue efforts by the authorities.
Megala and her family managed to escape their residential area when the waters reached chest level, but she and her husband decided to stay and help those in need.
“My husband and I decided to help those who are old and cannot walk. We took them to a shoplot right next to the police station,” she said.
Unfortunately, 30 of them ended up trapped there for three days until rescue came today at 3am.
During the time they had been stranded, they needed food – but no one came to their aid.
She noted the authorities such as the Fire and Rescue Department, police, and army were nowhere to be seen.
She said in the end, it was the public who came through by spreading the word that the group needed help.
This surprised Megala, as the victims had been shouting for help and their cries seemed to fall on deaf ears – even though the shoplot is right next to the police station.
