GEORGE TOWN – Roadblocks will be set up in Mukim 12 here starting tomorrow as part of the conditional movement control order (CMCO)
They will be placed at the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah bridge (two), Queensbay Mall (two), the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu expressway (one), the Shell petrol station in Sg Nibong (one), Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in front of Setia Triangle (one), and Jalan Teluk Kumbar in front of Pavilion Resident (two).
This affects Bayan Lepas, Sg Ara, Bayan Baru, the Free Trade Zone (Phase One to Four), and Batu Maung.
The roadblocks will be set up with the help of the armed forces, civil defence and the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) with a total of 380 personnel.
Balik Pulau district police head A. Anbalagan said the economic sector will not be affected and will see business as usual.
Employees will however need travel documents from their employers to leave CMCO areas while commercial businesses, including private healthcare enterprises, can only run until 10pm.
He said those flying into and from Penang International Airport will need written approvals and letters from the police prior to crossing airport checkpoints.
They will need to get travel passes before entering the state.
To ease traffic conditions due to the roadblocks, Anbalagan suggested that road users place their travel documents on their vehicles’ dashboard to ease checks.
Some 58 educational institutions, including primary and secondary schools, both private and public, will be closed.
Students who stay in CMCO areas do not need to attend schools located beyond Mukim 12.
Yesterday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the implementation of the CMCO in sub-district 12 here from tomorrow until November 19.
He said the decision was made following advice from the Health Ministry and after discussions by the National Security Council.
