KUALA LUMPUR – If he is innocent, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki should be a “gentleman” and have the courage to be investigated over the share ownership allegations.
Pertubuhan-Pertubuhan Pembela Islam (Pembela) chairman Aminuddin Yahaya told Getaran that Azam should resign or take leave when the investigation is ongoing.
“The trust deficit of trust in MACC is not new, but as a result of a series of internal scandals.
“Pembela has not forgotten how MACC ignored our report on land encroachment, especially in Pahang, even though evidence was submitted.”
Aminuddin said police and related parties, such as the parliamentary select committee, should be given access to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the Azam and MACC cases.
“Pembela will not compromise on integrity matters, especially those involving enforcement bodies such as MACC.
“The shortcomings in MACC need to be corrected immediately,” he added.
During Wednesday’s press conference, Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang said the board had a meeting with Azam on November 24 to seek explanation on the allegations that have since plagued the anti-graft body.
Abu Zahar had said LPPR was satisfied by the explanation given by Azam and found no criminal elements involving him or conflict of interest.
Azam, meanwhile, insisted he as the chief commissioner is only answerable to LPPR.
Azam also claimed the allegations of conflict of interest brought against him were created by certain parties looking to take advantage and attack MACC and ruin the commission’s image and his personal reputation.
