KUALA LUMPUR – The Rasuah Busters movement has joined the chorus in calling for a transparency and thorough investigation into the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) debacle involving chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The movement said although the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) has come forward to explain the matter, it has elicited more questions from the public.
“The weakness of the LPPR investigation has given rise to the perception that the MACC has failed to function independently, so we are joining the public in calling for the MACC to be more transparent in detailing and furthering the investigation into its statements related to the allegations involving Azam Baki.
The controversy does not help MACC to restore its battered reputation following cases of misconduct among its officers of late.”
In a statement issued by secretariat head Nurhayati Nordin, Rasuah Busters said Azam should take a break to make room for MACC to focus on efforts to restore its dignity and allow any individual or institution to continue submitting reports to the authorities.
It added that the prime minister and Parliament bear the responsibility in restoring public trust in the anti-graft body while lobby groups should realise that any “slanderous statements” can prejudice any legal action in seeing justice done.
“So, every allegation and action requires verification as well as appropriate evidence.”
Rasuah Busters then reiterated its demands made last September where it called for MACC to display credibility by proving that its management is not influenced by any party looking to disrupt the course of justice.
The people want an MACC that is accountable and dependable in swiftly discharging its duties. Any efforts to obstruct the body’s work should be dealt with.”
The movement’s calls come amid the controversy surrounding alleged business dealings involving Azam.
The Securities Commission had said it would call in all parties involved in the episode to seek an explanation for what had transpired.
