KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is in stable condition and is responding well to treatment after being admitted to the National Heart Institute on Thursday, Datin Marina Mahathir said today.

The daughter of the nonagenarian said he was admitted as part of a follow-up to an elective procedure he underwent earlier this month on January 8.

“His condition is stable, and he is responding well to the treatment. Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and the family appeals to the nation to offer their prayers for his speedy recovery,” she wrote in the statement.

Earlier, the Langkawi MP’s aides had confirmed with media agencies that he had been admitted into the NHI Cardiac Care Unit.

Journalists were seen congregating around NHI’s vicinity from around 1pm today in anticipation of any official announcement on Dr Mahathir’s condition.

Among those sighted entering the institute include Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Dr Mahathir’s son Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, and several other family members.

It was previously reported that on December 16, Mahathir had been admitted to the NHI to undergo health screenings and was released about eight days later after undergoing several tests.

He was admitted again earlier this month and later discharged on January 13 after spending seven days in health facility. – The Vibes, January 22, 2022
