KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be investigating Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, who recently accused the commission’s officers of intimidation.
In a statement today, MACC denied the allegations by Maszlee and added that it has received two complaints against the MP.
“According to the law, investigation processes must be carried out once we have received an official complaint regarding bribery offences and the misuse of funds,” it said.
Stressing that the commission will not bow down to pressure from any parties attempting to distract it from the matter at hand, it added that all investigations will be carried out according to standard operating procedures, which include speaking to witnesses involved in the issue.
Yesterday, Maszlee claimed that MACC officials had intimidated several of his officers at his service centre in Simpang Renggam, when the officials in question dropped by the centre and questioned his officers on the activities organised in the constituency.
“The MACC officers were obviously trying to dig for possible mistakes that may be found in my welfare and educational activities in Simpang Renggam,” he told the press waiting outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday afternoon.
Alleging that such actions are related to his support for calls urging the investigation of MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki, the former education minister had yesterday been called in for questioning by police over a demonstration outside the Parliament building on January 20.
Organised by PKR-led youth groups, the demonstration saw the handing over of a memorandum to the government to save MACC following the stock ownership controversy surrounding its chief commissioner, and was attended by several other opposition lawmakers.
On January 22, the Arrest Azam Baki Action Committee had organised a #TangkapAzamBaki rally calling for the arrest of the MACC chief following a confirmation by the Security Commission that he had been the one operating the trading accounts he had personally opened. – The Vibes, January 30, 2022
