KUALA LUMPUR – Advocacy organisation Sekhar Institute and news portal The Vibes are holding a virtual forum, titled “Beyond Vision 2020: Growth with Equity in the New Decade”, today, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is being livestreamed on The Vibes portal and Facebook.

The speakers are:

Prof Jomo Sundaram – prominent economist and former member of the Council of Eminent Persons;

Dr Firas Raad – country manager for Malaysia, World Bank;

Tawfik Ismail – social activist, corporate figure and former MP;

Dr Lee Hwok Aun – economist and senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore;

Prof Graham Kendall – provost, CEO and pro-vice-chancellor of University of Nottingham, Malaysia;

Datuk (Dr) Vinod Sekhar – chairman of Sekhar Institute;

P. Gunasegaram (moderator) – executive director of Sekhar Institute, editorial consultant at The Vibes; and,

Patrick Teoh – master of ceremonies

The event will look at what it will take to put a moribund economy back on track and achieve growth with an equitable distribution of income. 

It will also examine ways to make the economy more productive, and the policies needed to implement short-, medium- and long-term goals, as well as the conditions, necessary to make this happen. 

The context for the seminar is that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Vision 2020 has turned to dust – it was obvious that Malaysia would not achieve developed-nation status according to World Bank standards this year. 

And, the new 10-year Shared Property Vision, announced in October last year when Dr Mahathir was prime minister, looks short on the real stuff to inject pep, verve and spirit into the economy.

This is the first event to be organised by Sekhar Institute, a research and advocacy organisation, to explain, publicise and promote the concept of social or good capitalism as a tool to lift people out of poverty. 

It promotes intelligent and considered debate on social, public and economic issues to build awareness and enable appropriate policy formulation and implementation. 

Under social capitalism, enterprises are run as profitable ventures, while simultaneously helping to lift employees, customers, stakeholders and society in general out of poverty.

One activity under Sekhar Institute is the Good Capitalism Forum, where global speakers and participants discuss key concepts and programmes for the advancement of good capitalism.

As part of the programme to build consensus and awareness on important issues and galvanise action, Sekhar Institute organises seminars and webinars, and will publish papers and books, and produce a quarterly journal. – The Vibes, November 9, 2020
