ALOR SETAR – The Kedah state government has welcomed a company’s proposal to redevelop the former Perwaja Steel manufacturing plant site near Gurun as a new non-ferrous industrial area.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor however said, the company would have to comply with the criteria set by the Department of Environment (DOE) before developing the 200-hectare area site.

“When I was in Dubai recently, I met several non-ferrous industry players who are in the electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) business.

“So I have asked the executive council member involved to look into this and with the cooperation of DOE we have met with the company representatives to provide them the guidelines that must be strictly followed to obtain approval,” he told reporters after the state civil service assembly at Dataran Wisma Darul. Safe here today.

On February 21, the media reported that United Base Metals Sdn Bhd (UBM)  was planning to develop a new industrial area known as Bandar Non-Ferus at the former Perwaja Steel manufacturing plant site.

The Kedah Menteri Besar hoped that the company could be a pioneer in the non-ferrous metal manufacturing industry in the state and would ensure that the air quality guidelines are adhered to.

“At the same time, the Sungai Petani Municipal Council (MPSPK), DOE and the state government will always conduct air quality monitoring to control pollution (in the future),” he said. – Bernama, February 27, 2022
