KUALA LUMPUR – The decision to close all schools for the remainder of the calendar year, even in states not under the conditional movement control order (CMCO) is due to poor attendance.

This as parents exercise caution about sending their children to school amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin told Dewan Rakyat today.

He said government data has shown an increase in Covid-19 cases and close contacts involving students and teachers in non-CMCO states – Kelantan, Perlis, Pahang and Sarawak.

“The school closure in these four states involved 1,087,803 students, 99,491 teachers and 20,438 staff members. This is a significant number in terms of assisting the Health Ministry contain the spread of Covid-19.

“Besides that, the Education Ministry feels that efforts to contain the spread of infection is pertinent in ensuring the school session for 2021 can start in a safe environment.

“This is also important to ensure public examinations that have been postponed to February next year can be carried out smoothly and safely,” he said in a written reply to Dr Kelvin Yii (Bandar Kuching-Pakatan Harapan) today.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had on November 7 announced that the CMCO will be enforced in all states from yesterday to December 6, except Kelantan, Perlis, Pahang and Sarawak. – The Vibes, November 10, 2020
