KUALA LUMPUR – DAP’s Khoo Poay Tiong is pressing for answers from the government as to the status of investigations into the alleged misconducts of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.
The Kota Melaka MP when debating the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today, also called for the government to form an independent committee to holistically probe into the case.
Khoo contended the opposing explanations given by Azam and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) over who had control over Azam’s trading accounts.
“The question is Azam, during the press conference, said it was his brother controlling them, but then the SC said it was Azam who had control.
“So Azam has lied during the press conference. How can the number one person in MACC openly lie and still no action is being taken?” said Khoo.
He said the government must come forward to explain the inconsistencies within the case before suggesting the formation of an independent committee.
Additionally, Khoo questioned if rumours of Azam retiring soon were true, and if the government intends to use that as a method to close the case.
“I want to ask the government to explain whether the rumour will become a reality, and whether they will use this as a way to rest and retire Azam.
“The main issue cannot be that when Azam retires, this case is then closed. Investigations must continue,” he added.
Khoo’s recommendations echoed those of his party colleagues, including the likes of Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo who questioned Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun over his silence on some of the more controversial legal issues in the country of late. – The Vibes, March 10, 2022
