KUALA LUMPUR – Water supply to more than a million consumer accounts in the Klang Valley hit by an unscheduled disruption yesterday due to river pollution will be restored in stages starting 3pm, said Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd.
In a statement this morning, it said the Rantau Panjang, and Sg Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants resumed operations at 2.40am.
This comes after the plants recorded a pollution level of 0 TON, or threshold odour number, for three consecutive times.
“Air Selangor has carried out checks on the water quality at every part of the treatment process,” said the statement.
“The National Water Service Commission has confirmed there is no longer odour in the terminal pools.”
The four plants had been forced to suspend operations after pollution was detected in Sg Selangor, resulting in a supply cut in 1,279 areas.
The Environment and Water Ministry is offering a RM5,000 reward to those with information and evidence leading to the arrest of the parties behind the incident.
“Based on initial investigations, the pollution was found to have come from industrial effluents from various small and medium industries in Taman Velox and its vicinity, namely Kawasan Industri Kecil Sg Bakau and Taman Perindustrian Teknologi Rawang,” said Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man yesterday.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has said foul play may be involved in the pollution, and that there are certain quarters “unhappy” with the state government’s efforts to resolve the frequent problem.
Police have opened an investigation paper on the incident, following a report lodged by a Selangor Water Management Board officer yesterday afternoon. – The Vibes, November 11, 2020
