KOTA KINABALU – Sabah is in talks with Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) to establish a technical university in the state, said state Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Yakub Khan today.
He said a series of meetings have been held with Mara and the response has been positive so far.
“The university will provide technical and commercial training, and will cater current industrial needs in line with the Sabah Human Capital Development Blueprint 2021-2035.
“Sabah must attain a talent pool to support the development and needs of the industry, especially going into the Industrial Revolution 4.0,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech during the Sabah assembly sitting.
Responding to a question, Yakub said the state has taken into account problems faced by the Yayasan Sabah College (KYS).
He said he had proposed that Mara undertake a joint initiative with KYS.
As for the courses, Yakub said the focus would be on boosting long-term economic potential with courses applicable to oil and gas, maritime, tourism, and forestry.
In another development, preparations for the 5G network in Sabah will start in the second quarter of this year, involving 296 locations around Kota Kinabalu and Penampang first, said Yakub.
“The subsequent expansion of the 5G network will be done in stages. Service can be rolled out early for enterprises’ use in identified areas,” he said in response to Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Senallang-Warisan) who asked when Sabahans would get to enjoy 5G service. – The Vibes, March 23, 2022
