GEORGE TOWN – Police in Penang have crippled an inter-state housebreaking syndicate by arresting six men and seizing RM200,000 worth of goods, including a Rolex watch worth RM50,000.
State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) chief Rahim Ra’ais said the syndicate, which has been active since January, operated in Penang, Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
“In Penang alone they have committed eight housebreaking cases. The suspects are aged between 34 and 47.
“The 45-year-old mastermind has a record of 42 housebreaking cases and three drug-related cases,” he said.
Rahim said this during a media conference held at the state police headquarters here today.
Police believe one or two more suspects are still at large and that they hope to arrest them soon.
He said police started investigations after a 60-year-old house owner in Air Itam here lodged a report on March 26 over a robbery at his house and claimed RM50,000 worth of losses.
“The six local men were arrested in different states and they have been remanded until tomorrow for investigations.
“We want the victims of housebreaking cases to come forward and check with the CID to ensure whether their items were among those seized,” he added.
Police seized two cars, several expensive watches, cameras, hand phones and foreign currencies.
