GEORGE TOWN – Malaysia needs to learn from countries that have successfully contained Covid-19, said Kebun Bunga rep Jason Ong Khan Lee.
He said today that it was disheartening to see Malaysia has not reduced infection rates compared to its neighbours.
Adding that innovation is important in times of a pandemic, Ong said that he brought in antimicrobial copper sheets to be installed in high-rise residential buildings in his constituency, especially for low-cost housing schemes.
The copper sheets are installed on elevator control panels at the residential blocks.
He said it was an extra measure to prevent risks of transmission among the residents via high-touch surfaces.
It has been reported that copper has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties supported by scientific studies.
Meanwhile, Lawyers for Justice coordinator S. Raveentharan said it was best to compel those most vulnerable to Covid-19 to stay home amid the third wave of infections.
“Employers can play their role by asking those with underlying conditions to work from home or to be placed in areas where physical distancing can be best observed,” said Raveentharan.
He said the enforcement units under the National Security Council should also be telling those vulnerable people to stay at home.
Raveentharan said imposing lockdowns and mandatory wearing of masks were inadequate to deal with the virus.
“If proven effective, surely the infection rates can be brought down. Of course, a degree of complacency is also a driving factor behind the wave of new cases,” he said.
Raveentharan also urged the Health Ministry to deploy more counsellors to help those with mental health issues due to the pandemic. – The Vibes, November 15, 2020
