MIRI – The participation from all sections of the community in Gawai Dayak bazaars in Sarawak is a good sign of economic revival, observed the state Deputy Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Majang Renggi.
Speaking at the bazaar in Medamit township in Limbang last night, the Samalaju assemblyman voiced his happiness seeing the upbeat mood among the merry makers and how they are gearing up for Gawai Day on June 1.
“Traders and consumers from all ethnic groups and races are getting more involved in the festive mood. The Gawai Dayak bazaars are seeing good crowds.
“This is a good development as it will help boost the celebration mood,” he said.
The one-million odd Dayaks in Sarawak are making their celebration public, including the “Niti Daun” ritual parades that took place in a few areas such as Medamit, Song town and the remote Kapit division.
Dressed in traditional Dayak costumes and headgear, they walked through the town, dancing to the tune of their Dayak music.
The state Public Communications Unit said various community organisations, civil service groups, school teams and parent-teacher associations and village committees took part in the colourful parade.
“The parade was to showcase the colourful customs of the Dayaks. A miring (traditional pagan rite) was also carried out.
“There was good cooperation from all those involved to make the event a success,” said the unit.
Seeing that the country has entered the transition phase, no Covid-19 standard operating procedures will be imposed on the festival. – The Vibes, May 29, 2022
