ALOR STAR – The Kedah government is set to introduce an intensive padi producing scheme involving five padi harvests in the span of 24 months to address the present shortage of rice and reduce dependency on imports.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the state is close to finalising its discussions with relevant parties to implement the scheme as it would help Kedah harvest a higher yield for the nation’s rice supply.
“We will address and ensure adequate water supply in the canals located at these padi fields, ensure the construction of more canals, provide a steady supply of fertilisers and seedlings, and establish reasonable padi prices and subsidies for padi farmers before implementing the plan
“At present, Kedah supplies 43% of the country’s rice supply,” he said, adding that Kedah boasts not only self-sufficiency in its rice production but supplies 24.5% of fish caught inshore to the country.
Sanusi said this after handing over RM1,000 in compensation each to 585 flood victims from the Pokok Sena district after they were affected last year due to unusual rainfall.
Following the event, he also chaired the weekly state executive council meeting at the Pokok Sena district office.
He pointed out that the proposed scheme cannot be implemented in areas under the scope of the Malaysian Agriculture Development Authority (Mada), and has to be carried out at areas outside Mada’s purview due to the urgency of reducing rice imports.
Additionally, Sanusi also appealed to fishermen to be disciplined and not use illegal fishing nets, to ensure fish are able to breed and that fish supply remains sustainable for the local market.
Commenting on rumours of a general election being called in a couple of months, he asked all parties to wait until the end of the five-year term in May next year for it to be held automatically instead.
“We don’t have to resort to blaming individuals one after another for the present political situation in the country. Just wait until the end of the five-year term and see who the people want to elect as their representatives.
“All these accusations will not bring any good to the nation.
“Because of the mistakes of one or two politicians, the whole nation has been dragged down and it is better to wait until then. Everyone can continue their work without hindrance as PAS in Terengganu, Kelantan, and Kedah have already announced they will wait until the end of the five-year term. Negri Sembilan, Penang, and Selangor had also made a similar call for the elections. – The Vibes, June 1, 2022
