GEORGE TOWN – One of the world’s oldest uniformed organisations, the Boy Scouts, is focused on encouraging its young members to master digitalisation, sustainable development, and innovation.
Scouts Association of Malaysia chief commissioner Datuk Mohd Zin Bidin said the organisation also wants to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while inculcating a balance between indoor and outdoor activities.
The former major-general said that the Scouts movement embodies outdoor character, but at the same time, its members must be responsive to the changing world.
He said this when attending an awards ceremony at The Top in Komtar here, which was graced by the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who is the patron of the Scouts movement, and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
A total of 335 scouts members were awarded stars and medals for their active participation.
Of these, 27 junior scouts were conferred the King’s Scout certificate, the highest award in the junior scouts category.
Chow was presented with the International Friendship Award by the Korea Scouts Association.
Chow said that as the first state to establish the national Scouts movement in this country in the early 1900s, it is the state’s responsibility to ensure the movement remains prestigious and excels in relevant areas.
“As a voluntary organisation that has members from young to old, the scouts are without doubt seen as an organisation well-known to nurture and prepare individuals, especially the young, to be disciplined, to have a mission and vision in life, while coaching them to be responsible citizens,” said Chow.
He said he hopes the movement can help Penang realise its Vision 2030 goals of becoming a top liveable city. – The Vibes, June 7, 2022
