GEORGE TOWN – Penang police have confirmed that the suspect behind the alleged assault on state executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo had no motive and did not know the Datuk Keramat assemblyman.

Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said initial investigations found that the suspect, a 60-year-old Englishman, was most likely intoxicated at the time of the incident.

He said the suspect had been remanded for two days, and was released yesterday on police bail.

“I can confirm that the suspect has no motive to attack Jagdeep, as the suspect did not know that Jagdeep was a politician.

“There was only a little misunderstanding between them. The suspect was arrested a few hours after the incident at his residence around George Town,” he said during a press conference at the state police headquarters, today.

Shuhaily said the incident on Friday evening (June 17) happened at a car park in front of a famous restaurant and bar in Tg Bungah.

During the incident, he added, the suspect and Jagdeep came to the premises with their respective family members for dinner.

“We are still investigating if there are closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the scene.

“The suspect and Jagdeep have also lodged a police report on the incident,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code.

Jagdeep, 51, is presently recuperating at a private hospital, here, following a surgical procedure to treat his fractured ankle yesterday. – The Vibes, June 20, 2022
