BUTTERWORTH – An 11-year-old boy has been lost at sea and the authorities fear that he may have drowned earlier this evening.

Butterworth Fire and Rescue Station Chief of Operations, Senior Fire Officer II Mohd Faizwan Che Amat said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.45pm.

He told reporters today that the boy, Muhammad Mikhaeil Muqmin Abdullah was bathing with three of his friends at the Bagan Ajam Fishermen’s jetty at Pantai Bersih this afternoon when they were swept away by strong currents.

Although Mikhaeil was lost to the currents, his three friends were rescued by the public.

“A fisherman who was at the scene tried to save the victim but he ended up nearly drowning before he was rescued by the public.

“Firefighters searched the area for the victim. We were assisted by a volunteer fire brigade and local fishermen,” he said.

Faizwan added that the search-and-rescue operation was carried out until approximately 7.30pm.

Efforts were postponed due to nightfall and bad weather.

Rescue operations will resume at about 7am tomorrow. – The Vibes, June 27, 2022
