KUALA LUMPUR – The number of flood victims in Terengganu rose to 698 people from 201 families as of 4pm compared to 361 people (90 families) at 8 this morning.

Currently, 11 temporary relief centres (PPS) are operating in five districts, with four in Dungun, Kuala Nerus (three), Kemaman (two) and one each in Kuala Terengganu and Marang.

Terengganu Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief Lt Col Che Adam A Rahman said two more PPS were opened in Kemaman to accommodate 279 people from 79 families.

“The affected villagers around Kampung Air Putih and Kampung Teladas in Kemaman have been placed at the two PPS after their homes were inundated following heavy rain since early this morning.”

“In Dungun, the number of people seeking shelter at the PPS has also increased to 361 from 104 families compared to 81 people (19 families) earlier,” he told reporters here today.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Perak and Melaka improved, with only three PPS now operating in Perak and just one in Melaka at 4pm.

In Perak, three PPS were opened in Kerian, Manjung and Hilir Perak to house 191 evacuees from 47 families.

According to a spokesman for the Perak State Flood Management Committee Secretariat, 87 people from 22 families in the Kerian district are now housed at the PPS in SK Changkat Lobak, Bagan Serai after Kampung Matang Tengah was hit by flash floods.

In Manjung, a total of 30 people from six families from Kampung Ulu Kayan are still at the PPS in SK Kayan after their houses were inundated.

Several areas were hit by floods in Hilir Perak at Changkat Jong, Batu 9, Lorong Kedah, Batu 8, and Kampung Baru, Batu 8 in Teluk Intan, resulting in 74 victims from 19 families seeking shelter at the PPS at the Teluk Intan Municipal Council Hall.

In Melaka, state Civil Defence Force director Lt Col Effendy Ali said in a statement today that only one PPS was still open in the Jasin district, namely SK Parit Gantong, with 48 victims from 11 families.

“Another PPS at SK Tehel in Jasin, which previously sheltered nine people from three families, was closed at 2pm and all evacuees have returned home,” he said. – Bernama, November 27, 2020
