KAJANG – Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains confident that PH has the necessary support to form the government, despite the apparent backing received by rival Perikatan Nasional (PN) and other coalitions.

He said that he is confident in PH's chances as negotiations with other coalitions have been “virtually settled”, claiming once again that the coalition has the numbers needed to take over Putrajaya after results of the 15th general election (GE15) yesterday showed that no coalition won enough seats to form a new government alone.

“Things are looking good (for PH). My statement earlier this morning (on having majority support) was made based on our achievements, so I am confident (about regaining Putrajaya),” he said.

 “(Discussions with potential allies) are done, but I want it to be really proper and let them issue their own statements,” he added.

Anwar was speaking to reporters who had been stationed outside his home in Sg Long here since as early as around 4pm after rumours of a possible meeting between him and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. 

In a 3am press conference today following the election results, Anwar reiterated that PH has the support of enough MPs to establish a new government with a simple majority.

Tonight, Anwar, who is also PKR president, said rumours that he and Zahid had met were “fake news”.

He also said PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was issuing misleading statements.

“They (PN)...have made confusing statements on the Agong sending them a letter and about the amount of support they have,” he said.

Anwar was referring to Muhyiddin’s claim in the wee hours of this morning after the election results were released that PN, which includes PAS, had received a letter from the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong with certain instructions, following the coalition’s capture of 73 parliamentary seats in GE15. 

PH, meanwhile, managed to secure 82 federal seats, including one seat won by electoral partner Muda, making the coalition the largest single bloc. 

Anwar tonight also hinted that PH will be cooperating with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), which appears to contradict GPS’s chief Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg’s statement earlier today declaring that it will be working with PN, BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), but not PH.

“(PH) has had a relationship (with GPS) – although it has not been easy because of the long history between GPS, BN and PN – but the stability of the country is a shared task,” Anwar said when questioned on the apparent pact between GPS and PN. 

Earlier today, Muhyiddin had similarly claimed that he has the required support from GRS, GPS and other MPs to become the nation’s 10th prime minister.

Unlike Abang Johari, however, Muhyiddin did not mention BN as one of the coalitions PN had support from.

Zahid, meanwhile, rebuffed GPS’ claims of talks with BN to form a post-election pact, saying BN had not been having any discussions with either GPS or PN about forming a new government. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
