KUALA LUMPUR – Despite the two shooting incidents at the Malaysia-Thailand border recently, Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today assured that the country’s borders, especially in the north are safe.
He said the authorities will hold discussions in the near future on border security controls.
“They will discuss how to tighten and strengthen our security at the border,” said Ismail Sabri.
“It may involve an increase in personnel including the armed forces, adding control posts and weapons for personnel on duty.”
Ismail Sabri said in his daily briefing that the people in Perlis and Kedah do not have to worry about the threat of smuggling or crime at the borders.
Last week, a member of the General Operations Force (GOF) working at the Malaysia-Thailand border post, Padang Besar, was killed by a group of smugglers.
In the incident, Sergeant Baharuddin Ramli, 54, was on duty with another GOF member, Sergeant Norihan Tari, 39, who suffered serious injuries.
The next day, another GOF member was slightly injured after being shot at near the Malaysia-Thailand border in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah. – The Vibes, November 30, 2020
