KUALA LUMPUR – The main suspect is among three detained over the robbery and killing of a former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) researcher in Bukit Bandaraya, Bangsar, on Sunday.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said the suspects were detained in raids in Jalan Genting Klang and Jalan Air Panas here, and Jalan Rinching in Semenyih early today.

Two men were each nabbed about 3.30am and 4.30am, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old, believed to be the main suspect, about 5am.

“Police managed to extract a confession from the main suspect... that he was responsible for hacking the ex-researcher,” he told a press conference at the federal police headquarters.

He said police will apply for a remand order against the three today.

The force is hunting another man, identified as T. Sugu, 27, who is believed to be involved in the case.

“The remand of 10 individuals who were detained prior to this has been extended by seven days until December 6.”

It was reported yesterday that city police chief Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin announced that 10 individuals, aged between 20 and 29, have been detained over the robbery.

In the 3.30am incident, Wan Hassan Wan Embong, 71, was killed in the break-in at his house. His wife, Sarifah Yusof, 70, was injured.

Wan Hassan is believed to have been slashed with a parang when he tried to fight off two men, who broke in through the kitchen window. – Bernama, December 1, 2020
