KOTA KINABALU – The country’s biggest Malay party will not be content playing second fiddle to one that only holds a small number of seats in Parliament, said Umno information head Shahril Hamdan.

In a statement today, he said: “It is easy to say that the dominance issue does not arise when your party holds two prime ministers, despite the small number of seats.

“For Umno, clearly, whatever the final formula is ahead of GE15 (15th general election), Umno must be dominant. If you do not accept that fact, then it’s game over and no deal.”

Sharil said despite unity and cooperation between parties allied with Umno, there remains a line that cannot be crossed.

“This is the strongest party in Malaysia. This power does not come from any individual alone, but from the institution itself.

“So, even though we respect the prime minister and his institution, even though we help in the government of the day, the issue of dominance will arise, and it will not be apologetic in this matter.

“Umno must be dominant. What the meaning of this dominance is and what the strategy towards that, especially in the context of GE15 will be, the leadership will discuss... for example, the seats won by Umno will remain Umno’s.

“For example, if you want to comment on the question of getting two prime ministers so soon, maybe they should give thanks to God and thank their friends, not bragging and putting others down.” – The Vibes, December 1, 2020
