ISKANDAR PUTERI – The Johor government has admitted that the supply of affordable houses in the state is still insufficient due to the high demand.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Ayub Jamil said that 11,128 affordable housing units have been completed since 2018.

He added that a total of 1,579 affordable houses are expected to be built next year.

“(We) acknowledge that there is a high demand compared to the supply. However, the state government has outlined strategies to increase the number of affordable houses in Johor with the implementation of the Transition 2.0 Campaign, an incentive for developers to continue building affordable homes,” he said.

He said this in reply to a question from Datuk Zulkurnain Kamisan (BN-Seri Medan) regarding the number of affordable houses in the state at the Johor State Legislative Assembly sitting here, today.

Through the Transition 2.0 campaign, a total of 15,000 units of affordable houses are expected to be built by 2025, he said.

The Johor government has also stipulated that developers provide a component of the Rumah Mampu Biaya Johor (RMBJ) scheme of at least 40 per cent, to increase the supply of affordable houses in the state, he added.

He also said that the state government is also cooperating with GLCs for the development of RMBJ scheme including the Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor and Perbadanan Islam Johor, and set a target of constructing 1,427 affordable housing units.

“The Johor government is also working with the federal government through the provision of funds to build affordable housing under the People’s Housing Project (PPR); the Malaysian Civil Servants Housing Project (PPAM); PR1MA and Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB),” he said.

“We welcome joint ventures with the federal government to fulfil the people's dream of owning a comfortable home at an affordable price,” he said. – Bernama, December 2, 2020
