KUALA LUMPUR – Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan’s Facebook page administrator has issued an apology for posting a statement allegedly condemning non-Muslims.
In the apology posted today, the administrator claimed that the offending statement had no ill intentions towards anyone or any race.
“I apologise for the careless mistake that happened. The posting was not made by (Fawwaz) but was instead uploaded by the admin on duty.
“The statement has nothing to do with (Fawwaz) and (was made) without his knowledge,” said the comment, which was posted under Fawwaz’s account but attributed to “Admin”.
The controversial statement, which has since been deleted, had claimed that non-Muslims are conspiring to take down Islam, citing “sirah” (Prophet’s teachings) as saying that “murtad” (infidels) will never uphold the religion.
Previously, Fawwaz had visited the Sunway Carnival Mall to protest the open selling of alcohol in the complex. He posted a TikTok video where he told staff that liquor should not be promoted openly.
The move drew flak from various quarters, including Penang Warisan chairman Jeff Ooi Chuan Aun, who criticised Fawwaz for overstepping his authority.
Amanah vice-president Datuk Mujahid Yusuf Rawa also opined that it would be better to educate the public on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption instead of adopting unilateral approaches to object to such vices.
Fawwaz pulled off a major upset in the 15th general election last November when he narrowly defeated incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar in Permatang Pauh, which was considered a PKR stronghold, by over 5,000 votes. – The Vibes, January 18, 2023
