KUALA LUMPUR – Foreign artistes who wish to perform in Malaysia must have their values aligned with the nation’s ethos, including their daily attire, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
In a parliamentary written reply, Fahmi (Lembah Pantai-PH) said every concert applicant will be vetted for any criminal activities or poor image that could cause public anxiety. The government will also review the organising of previous concerts, he added.
Fahmi also noted that the vetting process will include looking into the applicant’s number of social media followers to evaluate possible implications.
“The government does not prevent any foreign artistes who wish to perform here from doing so, as the government views such concerts as a means of boosting the development of our creative industry and contributing to national economic growth.
“However, the government will ensure that the artistes respect Malaysia’s societal sensitivities such as moral values, Eastern customs, and public interest.”
Fahmi said this in response to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (Pasir Mas-PN), who wanted to know the government’s stance regarding the organising of foreign concerts, and whether it intends to create guidelines for the performances to be in line with local norms.
Fahmi remarked that the Application for Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes Agency (Puspal) places great emphasis on the elements related to community sensitivities and Eastern customs when reviewing every concert application.
He added that all conditions must be adhered to by the organisers, and that any breach will face administrative action according to Puspal guidelines.
The guidelines have been implemented since the agency’s inception in 2001 and has since been amended five times, its fifth edition being on January 1 this year.
Fadhli had previously voiced PAS’ discontentment with concerts by international artistes for allegedly going against the values of Muslims in Malaysia, citing them as “crazy work” that invites “God’s wrath” and threatening to hold protests nationwide if they were not cancelled. – The Vibes, February 15, 2023
