KUALA LUMPUR – Former Klang MP Charles Santiago has urged the government to focus on more preventive methods to curb pollution.
The former chairman of the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) also said that it is not effective to fine perpetrators after pollution has taken place.
“Waste materials are usually disposed of by unregistered third-party companies. I suggest that the Transport Ministry register vehicles from these companies.
“It will be more efficient if the ministry can fix a gadget to monitor these vehicles and know where they are going from time to time,” said Santiago in a statement.
Santiago added that this method could create some sort of discipline and order when it comes to pollution issues.
The former Klang MP also said the ministry has to look into more preventive procedures as it is pointless once the damage is done.
“There are many factors to pollution. Chemical pollution, chicken and pig droppings, sewage, and plastic pollution are all major factors.”
“How to manage pollution is a question the government has to answer,” said Santiago.
The DAP member added that a system needs to be created to alert the authorities when perpetrators are about to pollute the surroundings.
“Local councils will know exactly who is working in chemical-based industries, and people will need their permission before moving chemicals from one place to another.
“This will make it easier for police to fine offenders for pollution,” said Santiago.
Santiago has served as chairman of the Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs Select Committee since December 2019 and was the chairman of SPAN from November 2018 to October 2020. – The Vibes, February 16, 2023
