NIBONG TEBAL – The mother-in-law and newborn son of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) star footballer Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad were killed in a road accident near the Sg Bakap exit lane on the North-South Expressway here today.
Zainab Wahab, 45, and the 22-day-old infant died on the spot in the 5am crash.
Also killed was Titik Sukamti, an Indonesian believed to be the family’s maid.
Syafiq, 25, and his 2-year-old daughter, Aaira Nur Saffiyya, suffered minor injuries while his wife, Nur Amalina Nur Ain, 25, is said to be in serious condition.
The three have been admitted to Seberang Jaya Hospital.
Authorities believe that the driver of the family’s Toyota Vellfire lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the railing along the highway.
It took firefighters several minutes to extricate the victims from the mangled vehicle, said a Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.
Syafiq plays for the topflight JDT club, and was born and raised in Bayan Lepas, Penang, before peddling his skills as a footballer in a few clubs nationwide since his teens.
He is a forward and a national player with the Harimau Malaya squad.
In another case, George Town district police head Soffian Santong said a security guard stabbed a 42-year-old chef to death at an apartment block in Paya Terubong last night.
The guard, who had apparently been teased by the victim for a long time, became enraged and took out his frustration by stabbing him 10 times.
The guard, 56, who has a crimal record, was arrested by police at his guard post.
He will be remanded today, said Soffian.
