KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today vowed to use everything in his power to fight hard against those who threaten to disturb the country’s peace and harmony.
He said this during a portion of his policy speech at PKR’s special congress today which was directed at foreign diplomats present.
Anwar, who is the party’s president, said while his government acknowledges the special rights of the Malays and Islam, as enshrined in the federal constitution, it would not neglect the interests of other races and religions.
“We will never compromise on our principle that this is a country for all Malaysians, irrespective of race and creed,” he said today.
“If you challenge that, you challenge us. And I will use all the authority and strength at my disposal to fight this madness and insanity.
“Don’t fan racial sentiments. The ones who will suffer are the rakyat, while you scuttle (around) in your private jet.”
A total of 41 foreign envoys were present as observers at today’s party congress.
Anwar’s statement comes amid fears of unrest in the country stemming from irresponsible quarters playing up racial and religious sentiments.
The prime minister had said in a post-cabinet press conference yesterday that he had instructed all security forces to be on alert for possible unrest.
Meanwhile, Anwar said political rivals must not mistake his composure and guarded response in Parliament as him being a weak leader.
He explained to the foreign emissaries that as the head of the government, he should act his part while in the august House, but noted that his more fiery speech today is based on his position as PKR president.
“I chose this forum because this is my turf, the reformasi turf. I’m more composed and guarded in my replies in Parliament because I thought as prime minister, I should maintain the decorum.
“But many of my foes misread this as a sign of weakness. Many former corrupt leaders who were given the opportunity to lead had squandered the wealth of the country and enriched their family members and made their children billionaires.
