GEORGE TOWN – Penang plans to encourage more people to use the pedestrian walkways in the city centre to alleviate the traffic congestion here.

Newly sworn-in mayor Datuk Anthony Rajendran, who is also the Penang Island City Council president, said that the state encourages more pedestrian movement rather than the conventional reliance on vehicles and motorcycles.

“We are also working on installing more coverings in the city centre to ensure that it is not too humid for pedestrians,” said Rajendran after taking his oath of office today.

To further encourage walking, he said the council also plans to plant more trees in the city centre.

Other initiatives the new mayor plans to focus on include recycling and new measures to cope with the effects of climate change. – The Vibes, May 9, 2023
