KUALA LUMPUR – Delegates at the unity government national women’s convention were treated to a brief vocal performance when Wanita MIC chief Datuk Mohana Muniandy broke out in song as part of her speech.

Mohana, who was speaking about nation-building, belted out the patriotic tune Setia, claiming that the song will better “refine” her thoughts on the matter as previous speakers had already articulated their views on the topic.

“Since all (the previous speakers) have already delivered speeches, I will be singing a song that will clarify (my insight on) nation-building,” Mohana said before proceeding to sing a few verses from the song.

Her performance received a lukewarm response from the crowd of over 3,000

delegates from the women’s division of 19 political parties, with most members seemingly bemused by it.

Some audience members, however, were seen waving their arms or water bottles in the air to the tune of Mohana’s singing while she did the same on stage behind the podium.

Concluding her performance, Mohana said that the crowd’s willingness to sing along with her is symbolic of parties within the unity government coming together for the sake of the nation’s welfare.

“This is what I mean… we are all children of Malaysia and the Rukun Negara clearly outlines how national unity can be achieved,” she said to scattered applause and muted cheers.

Prior to her performance, Mohana took some time to say that the role played by women today extends beyond the duties of being a housewife, mother and wife.

“Women are the agent of change and the face of the nation’s future. Our roles extend to being leaders, workers, entrepreneurs and economic contributors, in line with the responsibilities shouldered by men,” she said. – The Vibes, May 14, 2023
