KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor is planning to stop the sale of pet cats and dogs at pet shops, state executive councillor Ng Sze Han was reported saying yesterday.

The Star said he was speaking at a forum on the management of stray dogs in the state, where the executive councillor announced the proposal that Selangor is currently studying.

Ng said the move is aimed at encouraging people to adopt rather than buy pets.

The plan is still being finalised, and would also help reduce the number of cases of pet abandonment, Ng was quoted as saying at the forum organised by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.

Though pets may no longer be sold at pet shops, the stores will still be allowed to sell pet food, he added.

The Star reported that some pet shop owners at the forum welcomed the move as it would curb the sale of pets procured from dubious sources.

There were also calls at the forum for a ban on “backyard breeders”. – The Vibes, June 13, 2023
