CYBERJAYA – Malaysia still lacks electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations to cater for the growing demand for such installations, said the science, technology, and innovation minister.
Chang Lih Kang said this was because the country only has about 1,000 EV charging stations, far short of the 10,000 targeted by 2025.
“EV is still new to our market and country. The (EV) ecosystem is still not complete because there are not enough charging stations. Therefore, manufacturers hesitate to enter the market,” he told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Alibaba Cloud and Agmo Holdings Bhd here today.
The cooperation between the two digital platforms is aimed at enabling EV users to identify charging stations and the services provided through the Agmo EV SuperApp.
The app provides a complete integrated system – offering cashless payment methods, navigation assistance, and rates offered at the respective EV charging stations.
Agmo is a digital solutions and app development specialist while Alibaba Cloud is a service provider from China.
Based on Agmo’s statistics, the state with the highest number of charging stations is Selangor, followed by Kuala Lumpur and Johor.
Chang said the government through his ministry would carry out several programmes for the development of the local EV industry with the cooperation of the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry and Tenaga Nasional Bhd. – Bernama, June 13, 2023
