PUTRAJAYA – Interns at government-linked companies (GLCs) will receive allowances of at least RM800 a month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said the Finance Ministry has instructed all GLCs hiring students for practical training or internship to pay them at least RM800 monthly.

“Though interns are there to undergo training and gain exposure, some are underprivileged and need to support themselves and their families,” he said during his keynote speech prior to the Budget 2024 Consultation programme at the Finance Ministry here today.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the move to introduce the allowance follows a suggestion by a Form Six student during a dialogue session.

“Students can also provide us with good suggestions. While we listen to expert advice, input from students is also valuable,” he said.

He also said some 35,000 jobs will be made available by GLCs, including those for technical and vocational education and training graduates.

Anwar also announced an additional RM600 in Sumbangan Asas Rahmah aid for some 200,000 hardcore poor recipients to help them buy food essentials.

He said the money would be paid out starting from July 17. – The Vibes, July 14, 2023
