MIRI – Sarawakians today celebrated their 60th Independence Day, with Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud delivering his message from overseas, urging all people in the state to remain united.
Taib said he was still resting abroad following the advice of his doctors.
“I am in good health and resting. I will be back in Sarawak once my doctors give me approval.
“The 60th anniversary is a time for us to reflect on our struggles to develop Sarawak and I am confident we will attain developed state status by 2030,” he said.
In Kuching, 70 contingents took part in a colourful parade at Padang Merdeka in the city centre.
Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg called on the people to remain supportive of the state government as it fights to restore Sarawak’s rights.
“We are making progress in our fight as the federal government has returned many parcels of state land to us, giving us education and health and other rights that belong to us.
“We want to continue our efforts to develop the rural areas and we are confident the federal government will help us,” he said.
July 22, 1963 was the day on which Sarawak attained self-governance from the White Rajahs of the Brooke colonial government.
On September 16, 1963, Sarawak joined with Malaya, Sabah and Singapore to form Malaysia. – The Vibes, July 22, 2023
