KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Noh Omar’s daughter, Nurul Syazwani from Perikatan Nasional (Bersatu) is among the candidates who stole the limelight during nominations earlier today.

Nurul’s candidacy is seen as an attempt by the lawyer to continue his legacy. He was also the entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister and former MP for Tanjong Karang.

He was sacked from Umno earlier this year in what was called a purge by Umno, which also sacked its former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Others punished included former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who was suspended for six years.

Former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, former Youth executive council member Datuk Fathul Bari Mat Jahya, former Johor state executive council member and Tebrau Umno division chief Datuk Maulizan Bujang and former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Shariff were also suspended for six years.

Nurul, who is also the Srikandi Muda chief for Tanjong Karang Bersatu will face Mohd Yahya Sahri from PH in a straight fight for the seat.

In the 14th general election, the seat was won by Rozana Zainal Abidin from PKR.

The state election this year will see several seats contested by wives and children of former ministers and assemblymen to continue their legacies.

On Barisan Nasional’s (BN) side, the wife of former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, Puan Sri Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid and their son, Mohd Najib will contest in Juasseh and Bagan Pinang respectively.

Najib is also the Port Dickson Umno deputy chief.

Apart from them, the son of former information, communications and culture minister Tan Sri Rais Yatim – Danni, 36, is contesting the Klawang seat in Negri Sembilan.

Danni who is representing PN will clash with his cousin who is also the incumbent of the seat, Datuk Bakri Sawir, and independent, Saiful Bahri Jaaman.

In Kedah, Gurun will see a fight between Mohammed Firdaus, who is the son of Dewan Rakyat Speaker, Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

Penang’s Phee Boon Poh, also gave up his Sungai Puyu seat which he has held for four terms to his daughter, Phee Syn Tze, 38.

The same situation applies in Teluk Bahang, where BN’s Ahmad Zaki Shah, 34, is contesting the seat won by his father, Shah Headan in the 13th general election. – The Vibes, July 29, 2023
