IPOH – Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu has given an assurance that said the issue of PAS supporters not accepting the candidacy of Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau for the Bayan Lepas state seat appears to have simmered down.

He said although many felt that a Malay candidate would be more suitable as the area is a Malay majority one, putting Lau there can be seen as one of the “beautiful” things in PN where support for the coalition trumps any one individual.

He remarked that their goal was not to just win Bayan Lepas, but to win as many seats as possible in order to enable the coalition to form the Penang state government.

“So, don’t worry despite there being sentiments (of opposing and boycotting) at first but now we see after the nomination process yesterday, the situation is getting calmer,” he said at an event at the Perak Bersatu office in Meru Raya, today.

It was previously reported that PAS in Bayan Lepas had made a stand to boycott the nomination process yesterday apart from wanting to shut down their operations room if Lau was named as Bayan Lepas candidate.

Bayan Lepas has 64% registered Malay voters.

It was observed yesterday that Lau’s nomination at the Bukit Belah hall in Teluk Kumbar was devoid of support from PAS machinery.

Instead, he was only accompanied by some 100 supporters, believed to be from Gerakan and Bersatu. – The Vibes, July 30, 2023
