KUALA LUMPUR – As the state elections draw near, all eyes are on the Selangor political landscape, especially in the hotly contested seats where prominent figures from rival coalitions clash.

Among the key players in this electoral battleground is former Gombak MP and influential politician Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, whose political relevance is at stake in this crucial contest.

Some have described this as Azmin’s last stand as it is seen as a make-or-break moment in his political career. Having suffered a defeat in the previous general election, he must now prove his mettle and regain political ground to secure his position in the nation’s political arena.

His fate in this election could determine whether he remains a relevant player in the state’s political landscape or faces potential sidelining within his own party Bersatu. With such high stakes, Azmin’s performance in the Hulu Kelang state seat will be closely scrutinised by both supporters and critics.

Despite being a divisive figure, Azmin Ali wields a unique influence in Selangor that sets him apart from other politicians.

While Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters hold a deep dislike for him due to his role in the Sheraton Move, he continues to command a certain aura of influence in the state.

This influence can be attributed, in part, to his previous role as the Selangor menteri besar. where he left a lasting impact. This mixture of admiration and animosity makes him a formidable contender in Selangor politics, adding to the intrigue of the state election.

The polls will witness intense battles in crucial state seats, such as Hulu Kelang, Gombak Setia, and Sungai Tua in the Gombak parliamentary area.

The contest between Azmin Ali and his former protege, Juwairiya Zulkifli, who now represents PH, highlights the personal and ideological rivalries within the political arena.

Tactical manoeuvring

With both the PH-BN alliance and PN deploying strategic moves to secure their respective footholds in the state, intense manoeuvring has taken place.

For instance, there has been a realignment of seat allocations, such as in PKR’s takeover of the Hulu Kelang seat from fellow component Amanah, showcasing tactical manoeuvring to maximise PH’s chances of success.

PKR’s push to reclaim the Hulu Kelang seat is a testament to their determination to outmanoeuvre opponents and consolidate their position in the state.

The Selangor election results will undoubtedly have ripple effects on the political landscape, both within the state and at the national level.

The outcome will shape the power dynamics, influence party strategies, and may even have ramifications for the national coalition’s cohesion.

Regardless of the results, the Selangor polls will serve as a critical litmus test for the political fortunes of key players, including Azmin Ali, Juwairiya Zulkifli, and other prominent politicians in Selangor’s intricate political web.

The state elections present a highly charged and closely watched contest, with intricate political dynamics, making it a fascinating political theatre to watch.

The results will determine the fate of influential politicians and may have implications that extend beyond Selangor’s borders. – The Vibes, July 31, 2023
