JOHOR BARU – The lack of effective communication ahead of the six state elections is among the reasons for the decline in the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) government’s performance, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“There is room for improvement in the government’s communication efforts,” the prime minister said during a dialogue at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai, Johor today.
A student had suggested that Putrajaya’s weak communications machinery was among the reasons PH-BN lost ground to Perikatan Nasional in the recent elections.
The Form 6 student said this was especially on social media, which led to the unity government's work being overshadowed by criticisms and even slander.
The student, Syed Ali, suggested that the government establish a strong media unit to effectively disseminate all relevant information to the public.
“I would like to thank Syed Ali. Yes, it’s true there have been weaknesses in our communications and I admit it,” said Anwar.
Anwar said he faced all kinds of accusations from his opponents, among which include being labelled a “tool for DAP” and also as one who betrayed Islam.
He also said he received attacks for using government helicopters and aircraft despite the fact that he was on official government business.
“I only use helicopters and aircraft at my disposal for official government business.
“So, be reasonable. I believe other prime ministers before this, even from Bersatu, have gone through this,” he said.
Anwar also called on his critics to be fair before hurling lies at him after he was alleged to often fly off overseas.
However, he said the responsibility for countering such criticism and attacks does not rest solely on the government.
“The younger generation can do their part in combating the lies with accurate information.
He called on them to assist the unity government in fighting the culture of lies with a new political and economic narrative.
“You, the youth, can act to save the country, and not get caught up in older folks’ constant need to bicker,” he added. – The Vibes, September 3, 2023
