PETALING JAYA – In line with the principles of justice and accountability, DAP today called on outgoing Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to explain the factors behind the prosecution’s request in Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s case.
“The AG should publicly explain the factors leading to the decision by the Attorney General’s Chambers to apply for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for the Umno president.
“Such an explanation is important to ensure the confidence of the public and international community is protected,” said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.
He said the prosecution’s request for a DNAA to halt proceedings while more detailed investigations are held is up to the discretion of the AG, and the decision was made by the court.
However, while DAP respects the court process and its decision, for the sake of justice and accountability, Idrus must offer an explanation of the factors that led to the decision, he said in a Facebook post.
“DAP acknowledges that the high court’s decision to grant a DNAA for all of Zahid’s 47 corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering charges had been strongly criticised by various parties.
“The party will always uphold the principle of separation of powers of the judicial, executive and legislative branches of government, and ensure that there is no executive interference in any court case,” he added.
Yesterday, Zahid was granted a DNAA on all 47 of his corruption, criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering charges.
