PETALING JAYA - Sarawak Premier, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has denied rumours that the state was planning to take over low-cost carrier MYAirline.

"We are focused on the acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd," he said in response to rumours that Sarawak may take over financially-troubled MYAirline.

The speculation was fueled after Abang Johari's son, Abang Abdillah Izzarim Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari, was present at the airline's public dialogue recently.

"People just began speculating after my son attended the dialogue.

"So now everyone is watching over my son and I think it’s not fair,” he said.

The report also claimed that Sarawak was expected to own a 65% stake in the airline.

“The state government is focused on MASwings.Negotiations are still ongoing and further details will be provided at a later stage,” he said.

MYAirline Sdn Bhd suspended its operations effective today until further notice due to significant financial pressures.

In a statement early this morning, the low-cost airline said it has come to this “extremely painful decision” because of financial pressures that have made it necessary to suspend operations pending the shareholder restructuring and recapitalisation of the airline. - The Vibes, October 12, 2023
