BINTULU - Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi) today announced its Jepak by-election candidate, pledging to highlight the woes of the rakyat due to the rising costs of living during their campaign.

Aspirasi president Lina Soo today announced well-known local businessman Chieng Lea Phing, 64, as the party’s Jepak candidate.

Soo, in a statement, said Chieng has been given the official letter confirming his candidacy.

Chieng is a local born in Bintulu (district) and a resident of Jepak.

He is also well known in Bintulu with businesses in the jewellery and hospitality industries.

"I pledge to open up mini-marts and grocery stores in Jepak if elected to sell food and essential household items at the lowest price possible.

"People are suffering due to the high prices of food and essential goods and families are struggling just to put three daily meals on the table.

"I will use all my state assemblyman salary for the rakyat if elected," he said.

Aspirasi will also highlight current issues on the rights of Sarawakians, he said.

Nomination day for the Jepak by-election will be on Oct 21 and polling on Nov 4.

The by-election was called following the Sept 15 demise of assemblyman Datuk Talib Zulpilip who was from Gabungan Parti Sarawak component party - Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu.
