SAN FRANCISCO – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will express the Malaysian perspective of the global economy and regional issues to business leaders, entrepreneurs and leaders at the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Meeting, scheduled to kick off tomorrow.
The Malaysian prime minister said he will highlight the need to strengthen economic cooperation and advocate inclusive development.
“This is also an opportunity for Malaysia to assert its perspective on the global economy, while listening and also expressing my views on regional issues and (make a compelling case to) influential CEOs, entrepreneurs and other world leaders in APEC,” he said.
Anwar arrived with his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil, and other members of the delegation were received by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s ambassador to the United States Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, and consul-general of Malaysia in Los Angeles, Anil Fahriza Adenan.
He was also greeted by Assistant Chief of Protocol for Diplomatic Affairs at United States’ Department of State, Nan Kennelly at the arrival.
APEC is a regional intergovernmental forum comprising 21 member economies from the Asia-Pacific region, with member economies including the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Australia, Canada, and others.
APEC economies accounted for about 60% of the world’s gross domestic product and are home to approximately 2.8 billion people.
The prime minister said he will use the summit to highlight the plight of the Palestinians in the ongoing Gaza crisis while attempting to attain global support, embracing and intensifying efforts to facilitate access and humanitarian assistance and seeking fair solutions.
Meanwhile, Anwar is expected to deliver a public speech titled “Superpower Rivalry and Rising Tensions in the Asia-Pacific: The View of Southeast Asia” at California University, Berkeley tomorrow afternoon. – The Vibes, November 14, 2023
