'POWER struggles' among the leadership of national sports associations in recent times needs to be handled maturely and professionally and not affect the sustainability of the development of sports in the country.
Sports Commissioner (PJS), Suhardi Alias, stressed that though there is a positive side when there is interest, especially from the younger generation, to come forward to lead sports bodies, the process of leadership change needs to be carried out ethically and prudently.
“The tendency of the new generation to showcase leadership talent is a healthy development. It opens space for competition of ideas and injection of new visions for the progress of national sports,” he said.
However, he expressed concern when the current trend showed that there were efforts to gain power in unhealthy ways, including unethical practices such as spreading slander, rudeness, and the absence of the principle of ‘fair play’ in the selection process.
“Leadership changes should not be tainted by rudeness, unfounded accusations or extreme attitudes that bring each other down.
“Sports leadership needs to be handled maturely, with ethics and centred on the value of professionalism,” he said. For the record, several national sports associations have and will soon hold their respective new leadership elections.
In this regard, he suggested that each national sports association formulate a structured and inclusive strategic succession plan to ensure the continuity of sound and effective governance.
“This transition plan is important so there are no gaps in leadership, and it also helps to identify and prepare competent successors,” he said.
He also reminded that the position of a leader in a sports association is not a place to simply show off ego or influence, but rather a great trust that must be carried out with full sincerity and integrity.
"Sports leadership requires high commitment as well as a clear and realistic vision and mission for long-term progress. It is not just influence, but a responsibility towards the entire national sports community," he said. – June 16, 2025
